Dexivant 30/60 mg: Uses, Side Effects, Precautions And More

Dexivant is a medication with the active ingredient dexlansoprazole, used to treat certain conditions where there is too much acid in the stomach.

It is used to treat heartburn or erosive esophagitis caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus.

Dexivant is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI).

It acts by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach.

Dexivant is available only with your doctor’s prescription.

How to Take Dexivant?

You can take Dedivant with or without food.

Swallow the capsule whole.

Please be sure to use the doses prescribed by your doctor, not the doses written in this article.

The dose of the drug will vary depending on the severity of your disease.

The usual dose is as follows:

Usual dose for the treatment of erosive esophagitis: Children 12 years and older and adults – 60 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks.

To prevent erosive esophagitis from returning and to relieve heartburn, your doctor may ask you to take 30 mg of dedivant once a day for up to 6 months.

Children under 12 years – Use and dosage are determined by your doctor and should be used with caution.

This medicine should not be used in children younger than 2 years old.

Usual dose for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD):

Usual dose for adults and children 12 years and older – 30 milligrams (mg) once daily for 4 weeks.

Children under 12 years old – Use and dosage are determined by your doctor and should be used with caution.

Things To Pay Attention

Studies on the effects of dexivant this drug in children younger than 12 years of age have not been conducted.

This medicine is not recommended in children younger than 2 years of age and may increase the risk of heart problems (eg, thickening of the heart valves).

Make sure you make your doctor visits on time while taking this medicine.

Do not use this medicine with any medicine containing the active ingredient rilpivirine.

The combination of the two drugs can cause unwanted side effects.

Check with your doctor right away if you experience a rash, itching, hoarseness, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, or any swelling of your hands, face, or mouth while using Dedivant.

Check with your doctor right away if you or your child have blood in the urine, changes in the frequency or amount of urination, fever, joint pain, loss of appetite, skin rash, swelling of the body, feet, or ankles.

If you experience unusual tiredness or weakness, or unusual weight gain after taking this medicine, these may be signs of a serious kidney problem called acute tubulointerstitial nephritis.

If you take this medicine for a long time, it can make it harder for your body to absorb vitamin B12.

If you have any concerns about vitamin B12 deficiency, inform your doctor about this situation.

You may experience stomach problems while using this medicine.

Check with your doctor right away if you have stomach cramps, a feeling of bloating, severe diarrhea that may be watery and sometimes bloody, fever, nausea or vomiting, or unusual tiredness or weakness.

Dedivant can increase your risk of hip, wrist, and spine fractures.

This risk applies to you if you are 50 years of age or older, are taking high doses of this medicine, or have been using it for one year or more.

Tell your doctor if you have bone pain, cannot sit or walk.

This medicine may cause serious skin reactions, although in rare cases.

This medicine may cause hypomagnesemia (low magnesium in the blood) in some cases.

This is more likely to occur if you have been using this medicine for more than 1 year or if you are taking it with certain diuretics (water pills).

Tell your doctor right away if you have convulsions (seizures), fast or irregular heartbeat, muscle spasms (tetany), tremors, or unusual tiredness or weakness.

In rare cases, this medicine may increase your risk of fundic gland polyps (abnormal growth of tissue in the upper part of your stomach).

This risk is greater if you have been taking this medicine for more than 1 year.

Do not stop the drug without consulting your doctor.

If you are going to a dentist or doctor, tell them that you are using this medicine.

You may need to stop using this medicine several days before you have medical tests of this medicine.

Concomitant Use With Other Drugs

Some medications can interact with dexivant and increase the risk of side effects.

Do not use this medicine with the medicines listed below

  • Rilpivirine

This medicine should be used with caution with the medicines listed below.

If you are using any of the following medicines, your doctor may change the dose of your medicine.

  • Capecitabine
  • Dacomitinib
  • Dasatinib
  • Dextroamphetamine
  • Erlotinib

  • Gefitinib
  • Infigratinib
  • Ketoconazole
  • ledipasvir
  • Lisdexamfetamine
  • Methamphetamine
  • Methotrexate
  • Mycophenolate Mofetil
  • Nelfinavir
  • Neratinib
  • Nilotinib
  • Octreotide
  • Palbociclib
  • Pazopanib
  • Pexidartinib
  • Saquinavir
  • Secret Man

Be sure to tell your doctor about all the medications you use (including prescription, over-the-counter and natural remedies) to avoid interactions.

It should be noted that some medical problems may affect the use of dexivant.

Be sure to tell your doctor if you have any of the medical problems listed below:

  • Diarrhea
  • History of hypomagnesemia (low magnesium in the blood)
  • Osteoporosis (bone problem)
  • Seizures (or a history of)
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • Liver disease

Pregnancy And Breastfeeding

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies with dexlansoprazole, the active ingredient in the drug, in pregnant women.

In animal studies (rabbit), dexlansoprazole had no adverse fetal effects.

There is no information about whether dexlansoprazole, the active ingredient in the drug, passes into milk during breastfeeding.

Be sure to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Side Effects of Dedivant

Like any medicine, this medicine can cause some undesirable effects as well as its necessary effects. These side effects do not appear in everyone, but in some cases, they may require medical attention.

Consult your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

  • Itching, numbness, tingling
  • Discomfort, tension, or chest pain
  • Blurring of consciousness
  • Ongoing abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea (sometimes bloody)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Palpitations
  • Fire
  • Headache
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Joint pain, swelling or stiffness
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Muscle pain or cramps
  • Nausea
  • Numbness or tingling in feet, hands or lips
  • Pain or discomfort in the jaw, arms, legs, back, or neck
  • Rash or hives
  • Tremor
  • Sweating
  • Swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, hands or feet
  • Swollen, painful, or tender lymph nodes in the armpit, neck, or groin
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Vomiting
